Launched in 2012, the Mexico Cocoa Project is a 10-year, $2.8 million initiative led by The Hershey Company and cocoa supplier Agroindustrias Unidas de Cacao SA de CV (AMCO). Through the initiative, we'll distribute hundreds of thousands of disease-tolerant cocoa trees to restore more than 1,000 hectares of cocoa farmland in the Chiapas region of Southern Mexico.
Since the project’s beginning, 105 demonstration plots have been created to teach farmers how to increase their productivity through methods such as improved irrigation, proper fertilizer application, and more. A nursery funded by the project has 305,000 plants that are being raised for future distribution to local farmers. Farmers are also being trained in farm renovation and Good Agricultural Practices.
