Dietary Needs

Gluten-Free

Hershey is committed to providing products that meet your dietary needs, and many people today are interested in gluten-free foods.

A food bearing a gluten-free claim does not contain the protein from wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut, triticale, farina, vital gluten semolina, malt vinegar or protein derivatives of these foods, or, if such grain is present, the level of such gluten protein has been reduced to less than 20 parts per million.

For your convenience, the current products listed below have been fully evaluated and qualify as gluten-free using standards established by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The best way to determine if our products contain a gluten ingredient is to read our product label. This label includes an accurate, current listing of the ingredients in our products. Because, on occasion, the list of ingredients can change, we strongly encourage you to check the ingredient label on the package each time before you make a purchase.

Kosher

Food products that are designated as kosher must meet the rules and standard of Jewish Dietary Law. Hershey has chosen the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregation (OU) to certify its products as kosher. To have a product approved as kosher, the facility, equipment and ingredients must be reviewed and certified by the OU. After all this is completed, Hershey submits the finished food product for certification.

Nearly all of Hershey's chocolate products and some of our non-chocolate products have been certified kosher by the OU and bear the OU symbol on the package.

Sugar Free

With Hershey’s Sugar Free Chocolate Candy, people with diabetes and those interested in cutting back on sugar have great-tasting alternatives for enjoying Hershey’s chocolate, Twizzlers Candy, Breath Savers Mints and Ice Breakers Chewing Gum.

Hershey’s Sugar Free products are sweetened with sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols (or polyols), such as xylitol, mannitol, sorbitol, erythritol, and lactitol, contain some calories and increase blood sugar levels to varying degrees. Our sugar free products therefore are not necessarily low calorie foods. Typically, they have about 20 percent fewer calories per serving than the original version and similar amounts of fat.

Sugar alcohols are neither a sugar nor an alcohol. They are called "sugar alcohols" because part of its chemical structure resembles sugar and part resembles alcohol. Sugar alcohols occur naturally in foods and are found in plant products, such as fruits and berries.
