Our company’s success allows us to create better lives for the communities in which we live and work, and Hershey employees are especially passionate about giving back. It’s part of what makes Hershey such a special place to work. Whether mentoring Milton Hershey School students or packing meals for disadvantaged kids in Philadelphia, Hershey employees regularly share their time, expertise and smiles with our communities.
Hershey employees are encouraged to spend time volunteering throughout the year, and once a year we come together as a company and spend time as teams giving back to our communities during Good to Give Back Week. Donning our signature grey “I’m Giving Back” tee-shirts, Hershey employees partner with local non-profit organizations in their communities around the world to make a difference – whether working in food banks, painting or constructing homes, or cleaning up parks. In 2016, over 800 people across three Hershey locations—Mumbai, India; Manila, Philippines; and Hershey, Pennsylvania—hosted meal packing events on the same day with the nonprofit Rise Against Hunger (formerly known as Stop Hunger Now), packing over 341,000 meals for children and families in need.
Our Hershey Canada teams regularly contribute time and expertise to a range of charities, including our Nourishing Minds partner, Food Banks Canada, and its network of local food banks. A small but dedicated team of employees from Granby wakes up early each week to serve breakfast to school children, and teams from our corporate office support the After the Bell summer meal packs program through fundraising and meal packing events.
Many Hershey employees take advantage of the company’s matching gifts program to support their choice of non-profits. And each year during the fall, Hershey hosts a Season of Giving campaign when all employees are invited to support the company’s charity partners, with all donations matched dollar for dollar. Hershey Canada’s Season of Giving supports the United Way, Sick Kids Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, and Food Banks Canada. In 2016, Hershey employees helped raise over $2.8 million to support these and other charities around the world as part of our Season of Giving and matching gifts program.
The Hershey Company has partnered with Food Banks Canada in support of the ‘After The Bell’ program which focuses on addressing child hunger. Our philanthropic support helped launch the new Food Explorers program which is working to improve the food literacy and self-sufficiency of Canadians aged 9 to 11 years, equipping kids with skills to lessen hunger and support good health in the long term. Food Explorers programming is designed to build knowledge and confidence around food, kitchen skills, meal preparation and nutrition. In addition to this, Hershey Canada will be sponsoring summer food packs which will be sent across the country to children in need – helping to fill the gap when school-based nutrition programs are not available.
