From the very beginning, a keen focus on community involvement and good corporate citizenship was integral to Milton Hershey's business model. He was dedicated to improving lives. As one of the most forward-thinking industrialists of his time, Milton Hershey built a town based on the belief that employees who could raise their families in a pleasant environment would live fuller lives and be better workers. The Hershey Company's commitment to corporate social responsibility is a direct reflection of our founder's life-affirming spirit.
The Milton Hershey School, founded in 1909 as a school for orphan boys, is a product of the love Milton Hershey and his wife, Catherine, shared for children. Having no children of their own, the couple developed a profound and deeply felt concern for the well-being of all children, especially those less fortunate.
Following the death of his wife, Milton Hershey donated virtually his entire personal fortune to The Hershey Trust Company to administer the Milton Hershey School. Today, the Milton Hershey School is a coeducational home and school that is true to its ideals and remains focused on helping children. The School provides a free education, as well as meals, clothing, housing, healthcare, counseling and career training, to nearly 2,000 children in social and financial need. The Trust is our largest shareholder and all of us are very aware that the Milton Hershey School students depend upon us as direct beneficiaries of our success.
