HERSHEY, Pa., Jan 18, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Hershey Foods Corporation,
the makers of Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM) nutrition bars, is launching a
contest to find the smartest snacker in America. The contest winner will be
awarded the honorary title of Snacking Smart Ambassador - as well as $10,000
in cash and other prizes - and will help Hershey raise awareness of the
importance of healthy snacking and the benefits of a balanced lifestyle.
The contest is sponsored by Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM) bars, which were
developed by Hershey Foods according to the science-based principles of Dr.
Barry Sears' Zone Diet and are the first products to carry the "Dr. Sears Zone
Approved" seal. Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM) bars are perfect for healthy
snacking, delivering balanced nutrition as well as the great taste and quality
Americans expect from Hershey Foods.
The Snacking Smart Ambassador contest winner will share his or her tips on
snacking smart in "Dear Smart Snacker," a one-time column for
http://www.hersheysmartzone.com. The new Snacking Smart Ambassador also will
be awarded an all-expenses-paid visit to Hershey Foods' headquarters in
Hershey, Pa., and monetary compensation for time spent as the Snacking Smart
Ambassador.
"We've set out to find an 'everyday expert' who can share advice on making
nutritious snack choices and on taking a balanced approach to eating, fitness
and living," said Sylvia Buxton, Director of Snacks, Hershey Foods
Corporation. "The title may be honorary, but we hope that our new Snacking
Smart Ambassador will truly inspire everyone to achieve a healthier
lifestyle."
From January 18 to March 20, 2005, anyone 18 or older can enter the
contest by submitting an entry form for themselves, or they can nominate a
friend or relative for the honorary title of Snacking Smart Ambassador. Forms
are available at http://www.hersheysmartzone.com. Information and entry forms
also are available from the Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM) Snacking Smart Squad, a
promotional tour that will visit towns across America, and from the
Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM) booth at health expos in selected cities. Entrants
will be asked to write, in approximately 100 words or less, their favorite
snacking advice - their personal plan for snacking smart and following a
healthy, balanced lifestyle - and explain why they should be awarded the
honorary title of Snacking Smart Ambassador.
Created under the guidelines of the Zone Diet, Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM)
bars provide an optimal balance of approximately 40 percent of calories from
carbohydrates, 30 percent from protein, and 30 percent from fat, and are an
excellent source of 14 essential vitamins and minerals. "Hershey(R)'s
SmartZone(TM) bars have a low glycemic load, which means sugar is released
gradually into the bloodstream. By preventing blood sugar spikes, the bars
help snackers feel satisfied longer, making it easier to control the amount of
food they eat, which helps to keep weight in a healthy range.
Hershey(R)'s SmartZone(TM) bars offer a choice of four great flavors:
Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Chocolate, Strawberry, and Lemon. The 1.76 oz.
bars, which retail for approximately $1.39 each, can be found in the nutrition
aisle at supermarkets and mass merchandisers nationwide.
